Before the Program?
Evidence, a woman in her early 40s, was one of the many hardworking women trying to make ends meet on the bustling streets of Kampala. We met her along Kampala Road, where she was roasting and selling maize a small-scale hustle that, while frowned upon by city authorities, is often a lifeline for women in her situation. Despite the risk of being chased off the streets, she, like many others, braved it each day to provide for herself and her family.
When we first encountered Evidence, she was not only struggling financially but also battling a serious stomach illness that had drained her physically and emotionally. Her resilience was evident, even through the pain. She showed up every day, weak but determined, clinging to the hope that things would somehow get better.
How the Program Helped?
When we learned of Evidence’s condition, we knew urgent action was needed. Her health was rapidly deteriorating, and without immediate medical intervention, her life was at risk. Through the generosity of our supporters, we fully covered the cost of her surgery and ensured she received the best treatment available. Beyond the operation, we also took care of all her recovery-related expenses, allowing her to heal without the stress of financial burdens. Once stable, we relocated her from the busy and often harsh streets of Kampala to our farm project a safer, more nurturing environment where she could rebuild her life.
Evidence took on a new role with purpose and dignity. She became a key part of our women’s empowerment initiative, helping care for and monitor a piece of land dedicated to sustainability efforts. Alongside other resilient women, she led the organization’s women’s goat-rearing program a project designed to provide long-term income and food security. Though the program suffered a major setback after losing the goats due to external attacks, Evidence’s spirit remains strong. Her journey is a powerful example of what can happen when compassion meets action, and a life once at the edge of survival is given the chance to thrive.
What Evidence is Doing Now?
After recovering from a serious illness, Evidence was gifted a goat as part of her fresh start at our farm project. This small act became a turning point in her life. She now cares for the goat with dedication, feeding it, watching over its health, and planning for future offspring to help support her livelihood.
Beyond animal care, Evidence also plays a vital role in maintaining and monitoring a piece of land dedicated to sustainability. She helps keep it clean, productive, and ready for farming. Her efforts not only support her recovery but also contribute to the wider mission of empowering women through responsibility and purpose. Evidence’s journey is a testament to how opportunity can restore dignity and hope.
